- There's a cow in one of the herds that has mastitis really bad and we need to identify and treat it ASAP!
Hi I'm Andrew, a 4th generation kiwi dairy farmer.
I work alongside my father on our family farm in one of New Zealand's dairy heartlands.
Follow me as I show you the day to day running of our farm and how our farming operation is much different than other parts of the world.
I lost my job in 2020 and since then have been milking cows and rearing calves. This video is awesome! Thanks!!!
Sorry about loosing your job but I really hope you’re enjoying the dairy industry 🙏👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer loving it! So happy to be out of the office, in the pit knowing which cow to dodge 😁😂👍🏼
That’s so cool to hear! 👏
@@TheOnceADayFarmer hey, please thanks to your dad for the hint about finding mastitis - I’ve been keeping an eye on the fuller girls and picked up a couple this week! 👍🏼👍🏼
Will do 👌👍
Hi mastitis is a pain we strip our herds if we get over 80ooo (we're tad though) main thing is not to stop when you find the first one, we stripped on Thursday cause our count went from 35 to 90 found 4 cow's .Im milking out Te Kawa ,Nice vids to have subbed 👍
Hey, Wow that’s a crazy low SCC! How many cows you milking?
Thanks 👍
Milking 420 Jersey x trough 36 ashb with inshed feeding we have been lucky to have low scc cows
Really enjoying the videos
A sharemilker mate of mine recommended these vids.
I’m finding them really helpful.
Keep it up 👍🏽
Thanks it’s nice to hear 👍
Hi from Colorado in the USA. I saw a comment about your channel on Tom Pemberton channel and thought I would check you out. I myself am a city girl born and raised in Denver, Colorado, but have lots of family that farm in Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Ohio. It is so interesting to see how things are done in different parts of the world. Also, to see the difference in climate.
Hi Betty, in 2015 I worked for a custom harvester that was based out of Kansas, I loved my time in the Midwest, people were really nice and was awesome to see how things work over there too. Blew me away how big the USA is, I think the whole of New Zealand fits into Colorado plus some!
What video of Tom’s was the comment on? Someone else has said the same thing.
It is in the comments on his challenge to cut the round bales. The guys last name is Bradley
First name Scott
Great looking cows lovely view from you milking shed
Thanks!

Hi Andrew, enjoy watching your videos from Ireland, just subscribed, worked in Waikato a few years ago on dairy farms, all the best👍
Thanks Keith! 🤙
Hi i like your video
Great vid hello from Ireland where we get a bit too much rain 😅
Hey thanks! I’ve been to Ireland a couple of times, such a nice country
Interesting
Hi new backing gate
Hi
I don't understand what your market is, with you not milking year round. Jersey are known for their high milk fat production so I'm wondering what is your milk used for. and milking once a day? most dairy herds are milked twice a day and cows, given a choice, prefer 3 times a day on average. I'm also wondering how you don't catch mastitis before the claw is attached in the 2 - 3 squirts on the floor before the milking head is attached. I've just found your site so you may have already answered my questions' It was the farm killed 'beef' (can't really refer to a Jersey beef, but...) that caught my attention
Most of our milk is used for milk powder, NZ exports 95% of our dairy produce and supply the most on the export market globally. I think we have about 2% of the worlds dairy cows but have a small population.
For a cow to be milked 3x a day you have to be feeding them a lot of food, our grass based system suits OAD milking with lower inputs and jerseys adapt to it really really well.
We get the odd case of mastitis pop up from time to time.
👍
Hi I live in Kelowna BC Canada was wondering where in NZ you are located
Hi! I live not to far from a town called Te Awamutu in the Waikato
Do u find higher cell count with oad milking. Your dad is in good condition for a man that milked alot of cows in his day. Do you get i extra labour during the year or for calving.
We have been culling on SCC, to try and get it lower but yes it is a bit higher on OAD. Goal is to get under 150,000 for the season.
Haha thanks I’ll definitely tell him that, and no we don’t get any extra labour. Unless we’re both away we will get a relief Milker in.
@@TheOnceADayFarmer the hips and knees gave in on my dad and mine are not great either. Milking heavy on the joints. We put in rubber matted floor in parlour few years ago. Great job.
I’ve heard those rubber mats are awesome, I worked in England in a shed that had one and you could definitely notice the difference. Dad wants to milk till he’s 65 so he’s got another 7 seasons to go yet haha
We get a lot of butter on our filter sock. How long have you been OAD?
Same here especially in April-May when the MS% gets up to 12.5.
We went full season OAD about 5 years ago
hey neighbour
is 200,000 cell count a bit high or is that cause you milk jersey we try and aim for about 80,000 normally sits at about 110,000
we milk 380 jersey, Friesian and crossbred heard but mainly friesian
jamie from otorohanga/te awamutu
Hey Jamie, Yeah it’s a little higher than we would like, ideally we want to average under 150 for the season, currently 175,000 STD. And yes I think on OAD it probably does sit a little bit higher than normal.
110’s good tho! Nice to be having a better season than last year tho aye
great season weather has been good a little more rain would nice but hay can't complain overall perfect crop conditions
chickery is loving it this year
p.s thanks good to know
High cell count.how pays your milk factory the milk quality. Slowly greetings from Switzerland.
SCC any where from 150,000 - 230,000
How many kgs of soilds are u getting per cow per lactation?
Around the 300 mark hopefully looking to do a few more this season
@@TheOnceADayFarmer thanks
Love lol
Live the accent.
Haha thanks! Where are you watching from?
@@TheOnceADayFarmer TN the volunteer state
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Beautiful herd by the way.
Awesome!! And thanks 🙏
Can I get job in your farm
No sorry
you just hadent cheeked to filter for ages so there was a big build up
There’s always a new filter sock put on before each milking and only check at the end when washing up.
